Kuantan polytechnic student killed, pillion rider injured in crash

KUANTAN: A polytechnic student was killed, while his pillion rider escaped with injuries when their motorcycle rammed into the rear of a lorry along the Kuantan Bypass stretch yesterday.

The incident is the second reported this month after a senior citizen was killed after crashing his four-wheel-drive vehicle into a similar lorry which was watering the plants by the road on Aug 7.

Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said motorcyclist Muhammad Nafis Ifwat Sasuhilmy, 19, died while receiving treatment at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) medical centre about 9.10pm.

"Investigations revealed,Nafis Ifwat was riding his motorcycle with a friend when the incident occurred about 3.20pm. They were travelling in the same direction with the lorry, from Terminal Sentral Kuantan towards Semambu.

"The lorry was watering the plants and moving on the fast lane. Nafis Ifwat, who was riding on the left lane is believed to have changed lanes to the fast lane and crashed into the rear of the lorry," he said in a statement today.

Wan Mohd Zahari said Nafis Ifwat and his 19-year-old pillion rider were taken to the IIUM medical centre for treatment.

"Nafis Ifwat succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital's red zone while his friend is still being treated. Both of them are Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah polytechnic students," he said, adding the 32-year-old lorry driver and his assistant escaped unhurt.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

On Aug 7, a 63-year-old gardener was killed after crashing his pickup truck into a lorry owned by the contractor hired by the Kuantan City Council to water plants along the Kuantan bypass about 12.30pm.
