Slim River water surge worst in over 20 years, say residents

SLIM RIVER: Flood victims described the water surge and burst of the Sungai Geliting water intake area as the worst disasters they ever experienced here in the past two decades.

Raja Abu Bakar Raja Adnan, 52, who lives in Kampung Pasir Sungai Muda, said the incident happened so quickly that there was little his family could do.

"This was the most terrifying event because we had never experienced a flood that caused the water intake to burst and the bridge connecting the village to collapse.

"Nothing could be salvaged except for the lives of my family because the water level reached waist-high," he said.

The father of three spoke when met at the temporary evacuation centre at Jamek Mosque in Kampung Pasir Sungai Muda.

Meanwhile, Nurul Niza Sahapiee, 38, from Kampung Pasir Sungai Muda, said she has been living there for over 30 years and the disaster occurred so rapidly that her house was covered in thick mud.

"My family and I are grateful to have been rescued by the authorities yesterday afternoon.

"The water was so swift, carrying debris and fallen trees with it. I pray that such incidents do not happen again as my children are still traumatised," she said.

The Kampung Pasir Sungai Muda evacuation centre is housing 128 flood victims.

It was reported that so far 175 people have been moved to two temporary shelters here.

Scores of people were left stranded after a burst dam in Kampung Ulu Slim, near Kampung Slim caused a powerful surge of water, flooding their homes.

The burst dam, which followed intense rainfall, also led to the collapse of three bridges.
