[UPDATED] Sinkhole incident: IWK to conduct flushing of sewage sludge

KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) will conduct sewer flushing at its Pantai Dalam plant in an effort to locate the woman who fell into a sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India.

City mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said today the rescue team was searching in manhole 5 (Agro Bank Lebuh Pasar) and manhole 6 (Jalan Kinabalu).

"The Fire and Rescue Department is also conducting searches at the end point, which is the IWK Pantai Dalam plant.

"Additionally, IWK will carry out flushing work downstream and they have complete mapping of the area and have agreed to conduct an integrity test in this area," she said in a press conference here today.

Also present were Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Rozihan Anwar Mamat and IWK chief executive officer Narendran Maniam.

Narendran said the flushing technique is expected to be conducted today (Sunday).

Meanwhile, Rozihan said the re-inspection of manholes 5 and 6 was necessary due to previously slow water currents.

However, he said the inspection that was completed at 5.30pm, showed negative results.

"Based on yesterday's findings after inspecting all six manholes, we found that (water current) in manholes five and six were slow.

"This might be due to blockages or debris. We re-inspected them to ensure that both manholes had nothing obstructing them," he said.

Last night, the authorities finished inspecting all six manholes from Jalan Masjid India to the sewerage pond in Pantai Dalam.

However, there are still no signs of the 48-year-old Indian national who fell into a sinkhole on Friday.

The authorities were searching along a 7km sewage line, which can be assessed from six manholes and one rescue personnel only in full protective equipment was sent in to avoid the danger posed by toxic gases from the sewer.

The six manholes were located in front of Wisma Yakin, in Jalan Melayu, at the Jalan Melayu intersection, in Dataran Merdeka, near Bank Pertanian Lebuh Pasar and in Bulatan Kinabalu.

The sinkhole, which appeared on Friday, caused the woman to fall into the pit.

Rescuers found a pair of slippers belonging to her near the location.
