KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian badminton guru Herry Iman Pierngadi is set to coach Malaysian shuttlers if BAM offers him a contract.
The sudden resignation of Tan Bin Shen has made Herry the leading candidate to take over as the new national men's doubles coach.
BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh confirmed last week that Herry, 62, along with Indonesian Flandy Limpele and Dane Mathias Boe, are being considered for the job.
"I am interested and ready. Everything is still in process with BAM for now," said Herry.
BAM coaching director Rexy Mainaky, who himself had trained under Herry, is said to have high regards for Herry.
Herry's experience of handling the highly successful Indonesian men's pairs since 1999, can give weight to Malaysia's aim to win gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Under Herry, Indonesians Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan and Hendra Setiawan-Markis Kido were crowned Olympic champions. Hendra later combined with Mohammad Ahsan to win three world crowns. The other world No. 1 pairs produced by Herry are Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto.
Herry is also known as the "Wizard" by Indonesian fans for his ability to help new pairs rise on the world stage.
Rexy, when contacted, said that there is no final decision on the new national men's doubles coach.
BAM may have been delaying Herry's appointment as it is more focused on staging the Malaysia Open on Jan 7-12. The tournament will be Bin Shen's last assignment with BAM before the Malaysian heads to Hong Kong as its doubles coach.
