KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya's Geology Department has dismissed a social media post claiming that a huge cave formation exists beneath the city.
Its chief, Associate Professor Dr Meor Hakif Amir Hassan, said the department was aware of the post, which referenced an article making such a claim.
"The article was purportedly written by a renowned geologist from Universiti Malaya named Dr Sarah Jamal.
"The department wants to clarify that no such geologist by that name serves at our university," he said on the department's Facebook page on Monday.
He added that there was no such geologist registered with the Board of Geologists Malaysia.
"The contents of the article are not based on facts and are fake.
"The staff of UM's Geology Department are exercising caution in commenting on the incident in Jalan Masjid India, which involved a loss of life, as search-and-rescue operations and investigations by the authorities are ongoing, and the cause of the incident has yet to be determined."
The social media post had been widely shared following the sinkhole incident in Jalan Masjid India on Friday.
