Fire and Rescue Dept: Stay vigilant against unexpected 'kepala air' incidents

KUANTAN: Visitors planning camping and picnic trips to recreational spots are advised to stay vigilant about the potential danger of the "kepala air" phenomenon, especially during unpredictable weather.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Dr Wan Mohammad Zaidi Wan Isa warned that recent erratic weather patterns, including unexpected heavy rain upstream, could trigger this dangerous water surge phenomenon.

"We understand the appeal of visiting waterfalls and rivers for a refreshing dip or a relaxing picnic.

"However, we urge everyone to remain cautious, particularly when the weather changes suddenly. Even if the water downstream appears clear and calm, heavy rainfall upstream can quickly lead to dangerous conditions," he said at a press conference at the Indera Mahkota Fire and Rescue Department headquarters.

Wan Mohammad Zaidi said it was important to be aware of changes in water conditions.

"Visitors should pay close attention to any sudden changes in the colour of the water – from clear to muddy – and observe the water flow. Rapid changes in water flow and level can occur in stages and rise quickly," he said.

He was commenting on the recent cases of water surge phenomenon in the country including the latest at Slim River in Perak and Telaga Tujuh waterfalls in Pulau Langkawi in Kedah on Aug 23.

Wan Mohammad Zaidi also reminded visitors to check weather updates regularly and heed advisories from the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

"While it's tempting to venture out, safety should always be a priority. Verify weather conditions before planning your outing," he advised.

He also said that, fortunately, no water column incidents involving the public had been reported in Pahang this year.
