Flash floods hit Kangar, residents blame poor drainage

KANGAR: Perlis was hit by heavy rain earlier, causing flash floods that inundated 20 homes in Kampung Sempering here.

Residents claimed the heavy rain caused the poorly maintained drains in the area to clog.

Shop owner Mohammad Ali Hashim, 52, said drain water overflowed into his shop about 4am.

"The water was only ankle high, but it affected my business. I had to close for the day.

"This has affected my daily income. I usually make RM800 a day," he said at his shop.

Farmer Azman Hashim, 63, said he was remaining vigilant and was monitoring the water level of the irrigation canals near his padi fields.

"My 2ha of padi is just two weeks away from harvest. I fear for my harvest if this rain continues.

"If the drain water overflows, it can flood and destroy my padi. Farmers here will lose a lot of money.

"I urge the authorities to act fast. Maintain the drainage system to prevent further damage."

Azman said he believed the flash flood was caused by the delayed opening of water control gates after several days of rain in the state.

"Poor maintenance of the drainage system exacerbates the situation, causing water to flow into residential areas."

State Civil Defence Force director Lieutenant-Colonel (PA) Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said his team was closely monitoring the flood in Perlis as the rain continued.

"We are monitoring 14 areas in Kangar, Arau, Kuala Perlis and Padang Besar.

"Water levels are still under control. There have been no evacuations."
