Nineteen homes in Baling hit by flash floods

BALING: Nineteen houses in Kupang subdistrict were hit by flash floods following several hours of heavy rainfall today.

Among the affected villages are Kampung Hangus with 10 houses, Kampung Bendang Padang with five houses and Kampung Bendang Pecah with four houses.

Baling Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Mohd Faizol Ab Aziz said two villages in Bakai subdistrict, namely Kampung Jernang and Kampung Sedim were also affected.

He said information on the total number of affected families is being gathered.

"We received a distress call about the flash floods at about 5pm but as for now, we have yet to activate any temporary flood relief centre," he said.

Meanwhile, checks with the official "Infobanjir" website showed that several rivers in Kedah had breached their respective danger levels.

According to the update, at 7.45pm, Sungai Sedim level was recorded at 37.83 metres, surpassing its danger level of 36.5m with the water level still increasing.

The reading station at Sungai Gurun in Kampung Perupok has breached the danger level of 3.5m, while in Sungai Perik, Padang Terap has surpassed its danger level of 11m with a reading of 11.6m.

In Yan, seven houses in Taman Selat and Taman Samudera were also hit by flash floods.
