66 tonnes of rubbish collected on first day of KK cleanup programme

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 66 tonnes of rubbish, equivelant to 330 average-size refrigerators, was collected around islands off Sabah's capital during the first day of a cleaning up initiative yesterday.

Organised by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall's Solid Waste Management Department, the three-day KK Cleanup Day 4.0: Pulau Gaya and Pulau Sepanggar programme involved the participation of villagers from six villages.

They included villagers from Kampung Lok Urai, Kampung Kasuapan, Kampung Pulau Gaya Asli, Kampung Lobong and Kampung Torong Logong in Pulau Gaya as well as villagers from Kampung Pulau Sepanggar in Pulau Sepanggar.

A fleet of 12 boats transported rubbish from 11 village jetties, while 12 heavy vehicles, including compactor lorries, ro-ro bin trucks, and excavators, helped dispose of the rubbish at the Kayu Madang landfill.

"Congratulations and well done to everyone involved. May this commitment continue until the end of the KK Cleanup Day 4.0: Pulau Gaya and Pulau Sepanggar programme this Friday," said the city council in a posting on its Facebook page.
