Josh Amberger fired up to defend Langkawi Ironman title

LANGKAWI: Australian triathlete Josh Amberger is fired up to defend his Langkawi Ironman men's professional championship title this year.

Amberger, 35, said that he is mentally and physically prepared to face the challenges ahead.

Last year, Amberger crossed the finish line at Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, completing the three disciplines - swimming, cycling, and running - in 3 hours, 50 minutes, and 47 seconds.

"I am mentally and physically prepared to face the challenge of Ironman Malaysia once again, alongside other great athletes who all have their eyes on the podium. Among them are my compatriots, Regan Hollioake and Benjamin Hill," he said during the Ironman Malaysia 2024 Dinner at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) here yesterday.

This edition of Ironman Malaysia and Ironman 70.3 Langkawi 2024, organised by World Endurance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (WEMSB), has attracted over 1,800 athletes from 51 countries. Ironman Malaysia consists of three disciplines - 3.8km swimming, 180km cycling, and a 42.2km run - while Ironman 70.3 Langkawi features the same three disciplines but with shorter distances: 1.9km swimming, 90km cycling, and a 21.1km run.

Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, 31, who is also a former Youth and Sports Minister, is among the participants in this year's edition.

Meanwhile, Ironman Asia regional director, CG Lim, said that safety measures for the swimming discipline have been enhanced this year to prevent incidents involving athletes.

"More than 150 safety personnel from nine agencies will be on duty during the swimming event, and we have conducted specific safety drills and rehearsals.

"This year's competition also marks a milestone, with 60 professional athletes participating, along with significant growth in Ironkids and team participants for Ironman 70.3 Langkawi," he added.
