Soldier, pillion die in Tanah Merah crash

TANAH MERAH: A 22-year-old soldier and his friend were killed when their motorcycle rammed into the back of a lorry at Kampung Tok Che Dol yesterday.

Police identified the victims as Muhammad Zulekhman Mokhtar and Muhammad Hafizul Abdullah Sani, 23, who was riding as a pillion passenger.

Tanah Merah police chief Superintendent Mohd Haki Hasbullah said that both men died at the scene due to severe head and body injuries.

He said that the two were travelling from Batang Merbau to Gual Ipoh when the crash occurred at around 5.30pm.

"The incident happened when the motorcyclist, who was behind the lorry, failed to avoid the vehicle as it made a right turn.

The impact caused the motorcyclist to crash into the back of the lorry, pinning him underneath while his friend was thrown off the bike," he said in a statement.

The 38-year-old lorry driver was unhurt in the incident.

The bodies were taken to Tanah Merah Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
