MBPP cracks down on unlicensed foreign vendors in Bayan Lepas

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP), through its Licensing Department, conducted a joint operation today targeting unlicensed street vendors, particularly foreign traders, in the Bayan Lepas industrial area.

According to a post on the MBPP Facebook page, three locations were raided, resulting in the confiscation of all goods.

The Penang Immigration Department also participated in the operation, detaining four foreign men for violating their social visit passes by engaging in business activities, as per Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

"The city council will continue to monitor and conduct similar joint operations to combat unlicensed trading activities, particularly among foreign nationals," it said.

Meanwhile, netizens said that unlicensed trading was also prevalent in the Bayan Lepas flats area and Kompleks Bukit Jambul.

Some expressed skepticism, believing that the vendors would return shortly after the operation.
