Offshore oil rig worker dies in 2am road collision

KOTA MARUDU: An offshore oil rig worker, 29, was killed after the car he was driving was involved in a collision with a four-wheel drive vehicle in front of SMK Kota Marudu, early this morning.

In the 2am incident, Tommy Lai Jun Heng, who was driving a Perodua Kelisa, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

District police chief Superintendent Simiun Lomudin, said today that checks at the accident site found that a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by a 59-year-old man was heading from Matunggong towards Kampung Noloton.

"Upon reaching the road in front of SMK Kota Marudu, the driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle, veering into the opposite lane and colliding with the Perodua Kelisa.

"The driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser sustained minor head injuries," he said.

The victim's body was sent to Kota Marudu Hospital for further action.

"Blood samples from both drivers have been taken and will be sent to the Chemistry Department in Kota Kinabalu for alcohol and drug testing.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving," he added.
