KUALA LUMPUR: A 12-year-old boy from Henan province in China garnered national attention for his selfless act of giving his school lunches to his mother, who has a mental disability.
Li Shibo's act of love and sacrifice has resonated with millions.
According to the South China Morning Post, Li, who is a Primary Two student, was seen by his teacher, known by his surname Wang, as he handed over his lunch to his mother outside the school gate.
The teacher, after noticing Li's absence at the start of afternoon class went to look for him.
The teacher then witnessed an emotional scene, where Li was watching his mother enjoying the meal he had saved for her, occasionally fixing her hair.
Upon seeing his teacher, Li tried to run away worried he would be scolded for sharing his school's free lunch.
However, the teacher praised him for his generosity, capturing the moment on video and sharing it on Douyin, where it quickly gained popularity.
In another video, Li is seen collecting leftover food from classmates, explaining, "I only need some water for lunch because I am still young."
Reports indicate that Li also has a minor mental disability and lives with his mother, his older sister, who faces similar challenges, and their bedridden grandmother.
Their father died in a car accident years ago, leaving the family dependent on government aid and support from relatives.
It was reported that Li's mother often waits at the school entrance, highlighting the strong bond between them.
An online observer wrote: "He knows his mother is different from other parents, but he loves her regardless."
Another person described his actions "the finest expression of filial piety."
The story has led to a wave of support, with thousands visiting the teacher's social media account to donate money and essential items to the family.
Parcels from across the country have nearly filled their home, prompting volunteers to ask donors to pause their contributions.
In response to the family's situation, the local civil affairs bureau said it would visit and explore further support options.
The teacher also pledged to ensure that if Li's mother comes to the school again, she will receive a free meal.
