KUALA LUMPUR: KL City Hall (DBKL) has demolished 17 illegal hawker structures at the Jelatek People's Housing Programme area here today (Nov 4).
The demolition was carried out with assistance from police, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd after a 14-day notice was issued to the illegal vendors to vacate the premises.
City Hall, in a statement, said the demolition aimed to prevent the proliferation of illegal business activities and maintain the federal capital's image as an orderly and clean city.
"The increasing number of illegal hawkers not only creates an eyesore and disrupts the environment, but also impacts traffic, public utilities and overall cleanliness," it said.
"City Hall has made it clear that it will not tolerate any individuals prioritising their own interests by constructing illegal structures that cause various issues for residents living in the vicinity."
City Hall said it had held several engagement sessions with the Jelatek Residents Association prior to taking action.
It added that any illegal hawker structures in the People's Housing Programme area would not be tolerated and they would be removed to ensure that residential areas remained comfortable for residents.
