Over 59,000 evacuated in Kelantan as floods worsen in the state

KOTA BARU: Floods in Kelantan continue to worsen, with the number of people evacuated from their homes reaching 59,214 this morning.

The victims, from 17,553 families, are currently taking shelter at 221 flood relief centres across 10 districts.

Eight rivers in the state, including the Sungai Kelantan and Sungai Golok, have overflowed their banks following continuous rain since Sunday.

One river, Sungai Galas in Dabong, has surpassed its warning level.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is expected to visit Kelantan today.

Zahid,who is also National Disaster Management Committee chairman, is expected to arrive at about 4pm.

He is scheduled to receive a briefing from the state Drainage and Irrigation Department on the latest flood situation.

The overall flood situation in Kelantan is worsening, with the number of victims expected to continue to rise today.
