KUALA LUMPUR: A man allegedly set his own house on fire in the Kuang low-cost housing project last night, with the blaze spreading to four neighbouring homes.
Sungai Buloh police chief Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor, in a statement, said the incident occurred at 7.06pm and prompted a swift response from the police, fire brigade and medical personnel.
"Sungai Buloh police received the initial report and immediately dispatched a team to the scene, while alerting other emergency services.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the blaze started when the 34-year-old suspect deliberately set fire to his property before it spread to four other neighbouring homes."
He said members of the public apprehended the man and handed him over to the authorities upon their arrival.
"The suspect was taken to the Sungai Buloh police headquarters for further investigation.
"Police confirmed that an investigation has been launched under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and a fine."
Hafiz said no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
