Police chase Myvi theft suspect for 40km

BESUT: Police pursued a vehicle driven by a man believed to be involved in a house burglary and car theft in the district for 20 kilometres.

Besut acting district police chief, Deputy Superintendent Md Sani Md Saleh, said his team received a report from the complainant about the missing Perodua Myvi in Kampung Padang Luas at around 9am before he lodged a police report at 3.44pm yesterday.

He said that acting on information from the public and police intelligence, a team of officers and personnel from the Jertih Police Station, along with the patrol unit and the Besut district flood rescue team, managed to locate the stolen vehicle around the Jertih area.

"The suspect, a 42-year-old local man, attempted to flee after realising the presence of the police, resulting in a 40-kilometre chase before he was arrested.

"A background check revealed that the suspect has various previous criminal records and tested positive for Methamphetamine," Md Sani said in a media statement today.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 457/379A of the Penal Code, which can result in a prison sentence of up to 14 years for housebreaking and a prison term of not less than one year and not more than seven years, as well as a fine for vehicle theft.
