Police suspect high-tech device used in Meru MPV theft

IPOH: Police have not ruled out the possibility that the recent theft of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) from a house in Meru may have involved the use of advanced technology.

Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said that a viral video of the incident suggested the thief had expert knowledge in vehicle theft, possibly using a high-tech device.

"They seem to have used an alarm system bypass and a technical device to start and drive the vehicle effortlessly," he said during a press conference after attending the Ipoh District Police Headquarters' (IPD) monthly assembly today.

The police are investigating the theft after the video went viral on social media.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed receiving a report from a 43-year-old man in Jelapang at 4.19am on Sunday, saying that the MPV, which was parked inside his fenced property, had been stolen.

Emphasising the seriousness of the case, he urged car owners to upgrade their vehicle security systems to prevent similar incidents.

"We are still investigating, and no arrests have been made yet. The theft of Toyota Alphards, four-wheel drives, and Toyota Vellfires is becoming more frequent in the state. We are launching operations to track down the suspects and advise the public to lock their vehicles and gates when not at home," he added.
