SIPITANG: The Sabah State Water Department (JANS) has detected leakage issues involving several water pipes, particularly ageing ones, which have caused recent water disruptions in and around Kota Kinabalu, including the city centre.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Public Works, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said his team had received information about the issue and was currently monitoring several identified locations in the city.
He said the leaks were caused by older pipelines and frequent water usage, which triggered changes in water pressure.
"JANS has been monitoring this for the past two to three days due to increasing demand.
"There has indeed been a drop in water pressure in Kota Kinabalu."The leaks are partly due to our extensive use of old pipes. When there are frequent pressure changes, it disrupts the system and causes leaks," he said.
Shahelmey was speaking to reporters after officiating the 2024 Christmas Road Safety Campaign Programme at Sipitang Town Esplanade today.
Also present were Assistant Public Works Minister Datuk Robert Tawik and Qhazanah Sabah Chairman, who is also Sindumin Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob.Shahelmey said JANS, together with water concessionaire Jetama Sdn Bhd (JETAMA), is distributing water supplies to affected areas.
