KUANTAN: Five structures illegally erected on the beachfront reserved land at Sungai Karang were demolished by the Kuantan City Council (MBK) yesterday (Dec 19).
Described as an "eyesore," these structures were removed by the enforcement team, along with two white canopies that had allegedly been installed along the popular beach.
Sungai Karang, situated a 30-minute drive east of Kuantan, is a popular recreational spot for locals.
MBK's head of corporate and public communications, Nor Hayatul Huda Othman, explained that enforcement notices had been issued in September, instructing the alleged owners to voluntarily remove the illegal structures.
"MBK had received complaints about the illegal construction of permanent structures on the reserved beachfront land, and a reminder notice was sent out in September, giving the owners seven days to demolish the structures," she told the NST.
"When they failed to comply, MBK took action yesterday, using an excavator to demolish the structures. We also removed two canopies that had been illegally set up along the beach."
Nor Hayatul added that MBK would continue to monitor the situation, as such illegal structures often become an "eyesore" for beachgoers.
