KOTA TINGGI: Johor sailing athlete, Nur Hazurah Md Hazahar, 21, was killed in a traffic accident along Jalan Dato Onn in Bandar Penawar yesterday (Jan 1).
The 21-year-old was on a motorcycle when she crashed into the rear of a car making a U-turn along the road.
Nur Hazurah, who represented Johor in sailing at the Malaysia Games in 2022 and 2024, suffered fatal head injuries in the 4.50pm crash.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
District police chief, Superintendent Yusof Othman said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Johor Sailing Association coach Naza Mat Nasir said the state sailing community mourns her loss.
"Nur Hazurah was talented and loved by her teammates. It tragic that we lost her to an accident on New Year's Day," he told the New Straits Times.
He said he coached Nur Hazurah when she was 13. She started her sailing journey with windsurfing, coming in fifth place in the Sukma 2020 Women's International 420 event.
Nur Hazurah then transitioned to the International Laser Class Association 4 when she was 16.
She was a student at UNISEL and balanced her training with her studies.
"She was passionate, dedicated, and deeply loved by our younger athletes. Her loss is a heartbreaking blow, it's a sad day for Johor sailing," he said.
