SUNGAI PETANI: A religious school dormitory housing female students was destroyed by fire early this morning, rescue officials said, adding that all the residents escaped unhurt.
Sungai Petani Fire and Rescue Station chief Ismail Mohd Zain said a team was dispatched to the Maahad Tahfiz An Nur hostel in Merbok after being alerted to the blaze at 4am.
"Upon arrival, the fire was found to have broken out in the dormitory. Around 80 per cent of the building was destroyed," he said. "However, no injuries were reported."
Ismail added that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
In a Facebook post, Masjid Al Busyra chairman Firdaus Firabib stated that all the female students managed to flee and are now taking refuge at the mosque.
He also mentioned that the students lost all their belongings in the fire.
Authorities are assessing the damage caused by the blaze.
