#NSTviral: 8 individuals ride e-scooters dangerously on open road

KUALA LUMPUR: A video has emerged showing several individuals on electric scooters recklessly riding down a busy road, violating the city's regulations against such activity.

The incident reportedly took place on the roads of Taman Maluri in Cheras.

TikTok user Pelanggaran Trafik Malaysia shared a clip on Saturday featuring eight riders navigating their e-scooters carelessly along a main road.

The post, which has garnered over 55,000 views, dubbed the riders "Gen Z Mat Rempit," implying a troubling disregard for safety reminiscent of Malaysia's infamous street racing culture.

In the video, the group occupies the leftmost lane, with some veering into the middle lane, and one even swerving into the rightmost lane.

The person recording remarked, "Welcome to Malaysia, where every day you see mind-blowing things on the road. This is truly next level — the kind of reckless behaviour you can only witness here."

The New Straits Times has reached out to the Cheras district police headquarters for confirmation and is awaiting a response.

Netizens have speculated that the individuals may be foreigners and are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to curb such reckless behaviour.

One user, @Syadzha, said, "They can be summoned. This is about the safety of other road users." Another added, "PDRM should take strict action against these offenders."

Since January 2021, riding e-scooters on Kuala Lumpur roads has been strictly prohibited.

Electric scooters are only allowed in designated areas, including playgrounds, pedestrian zones, and shopping centre vicinity.
