KUALA LUMPUR: A TikTok video showcasing a yellow Perodua Axia being ferried by longboat from Marudi Jetty to Mulu, Sarawak, has gone viral, igniting discussions and raising questions about connectivity issues in the region.
The car's owner, TikTok user @Gal_Rera, said the six-hour boat journey cost approximately RM5,000.
In a series of videos, she documented the scenic trip through Sarawak's waterways and revealed that transporting heavy vehicles by boat to Mulu is a common practice.
"Here in Mulu, we have no petrol stations or workshops.
"If the car breaks down, we have to fix it ourselves," she said, adding that her trusty Axia has been with her for over seven years.
In one video, her car is seen being carefully hoisted onto the boat using a crane, while netizens eagerly requested footage of the vehicle's unloading process. She assured followers that she would share the much-anticipated moment soon.
The video has drawn mixed reactions, with many questioning the state of infrastructure in Sarawak.
One user, Airays Unggas, voiced frustration over the lack of road connectivity in the region.
"How much longer will Sarawak have to rely on longboat journeys for access? We need proper land connections between areas," she commented.
Another user, Ozzen Am, urged both state and federal governments to address Sarawak's longstanding logistical challenges.
"The logistics issues here have persisted for far too long.
"A comprehensive road network reaching remote villages and towns is essential," he said.
