Internal conflicts led to BN's defeat in GE14, says Umno deputy president

SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional lost to Pakatan Harapan in the 14th General Election because of internal conflicts, says Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Even though many attributed BN’s failure to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, he said there were other factors that had led to the party’s downfall.

“Some people said BN lost in GE14 solely because of a Datuk Seri. But, it was not only because of the party president,” he said.

“It was also not because of any tsunamis. Umno was plagued by internal issues among members at the grassroots, branches and divisions. There were boycotts and issues concerning the nomination of candidates.

“This is something we must address. We should not repeat our mistakes and issues must be resolved internally. Only then can Umno bounce back from its downfall.

“Today, we are seeing a new Umno. We have the responsibility to give Umno a new look. We must identify our weaknesses and mistakes, and work towards overcoming them.”

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said Umno needed a new discourse and ideas. He said the party had to produce youth leaders of high calibre in the fast-changing political scene.

“We have to learn from our mistakes and take a new approach to face the new Malaysia,” he said.
