KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal expressed his concern over today's politics, where the intentions of politicians seem to focus on self-interest rather than building a nation.
The president of Parti Warisan Sabah said some current politicians were unlike past leaders, whom he described as fully dedicated to giving their services to the people and building the country.
"(Today's politics) is very disturbing. I am concerned with what's happening in our country. Looking at our history after we gained independence, most of our politicians held fast to the intention to build 'Bangsa Malaysia' despite the differences.
"Our politicians rendered their services to the country and the people to bring a strong nation. That was what happened in the 1970s, and we were able to build a strong foundation.
"Not just uniting the people but building up a poor country like Malaysia to be competitive with other countries in the world. These were the values of politicians at that stage, where their mind and heart was bonded to giving services to the people at large," he said.
Shafie said this when responding to questions posted by netizens in 'Shafie Apdal Menjawab' virtual engagement on Facebook live, last night.
In giving his views on the past and current political scenarios, the former federal minister said present leaders need to look back in the past and learn the commitment of past leaders.
Giving examples of the New Economic Policy, Shafie said if such an economic instrument is implemented with good intention without hijacking the real objective, it could eradicate poverty and unite the people.
However, he noted leaders nowadays seemed to prioritise more on self-interest and focus on their own group.
"What about other people? This is where I think we are drifting away and hence, we need to go back to the basics," he stressed.
Responding to a question whether he was ready to become the next Prime Minister, the Semporna member of parliament and Senallang assemblyman said he would take up the challenge if given the chance to lead the nation.
Shafie told netizens his experiences in holding federal minister and deputy minister posts namely for the Rural and Regional Development Ministry; National Unity, Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry ; Domestic Trade and Consumerism Ministry; Defence Ministry; and Housing and Local Government Ministry.
"I have seen what the country really needs... We will look at the situation... When I was recommended (to be Prime Minister by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad), I said I needed to focus on Sabah.
"But, if that's the will of the people, why not? I have no problem. As politicians, we have to face challenges but whatever the challenges are, if we have an intention to build the nation then why not (lead the country).
"It doesn't have to be me. We have leaders from Sarawak too. I think it's time to give Sabah and Sarawak a chance to lead as we are part and parcel of Malaysia," he said, adding East Malaysian leaders could provide input on how to mould economic growth.
