KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional is considering incorporating studies about the country's democratic system into the secondary school syllabus.
BN candidate for Titiwangsa Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said this was one of the ideas being mulled by the coalition.
The former second finance minister said this was so that students would have an idea about the country's politics and administration before they reach the age of 18 when they are allowed to vote.
"We have been thinking about it since the voting age was revised from 21 to 18 years old. It would be a good form of early exposure for them," he said at a meet-and-greet session with Pangsapuri Pandanmas 2 residents here, tonight.
Johari said if BN wins, they may consider this for secondary school students, most likely for Form 4 and 5 students.
"They would then have an idea about the nation's political scene and would be able to make their own judgment when it comes to elections," he said.
On the contest for the Titiwangsa seat, he said he was no stranger to voters in the constituency, have been born and bred in Kampung Pandan.
"I grew up in Kampung Pandan, studied at SMK Aminuddin Baki and am very passionate about the needs of the people here. Rest assured," he said in his speech.
He cautioned the constituents not to make the same mistake of choosing a candidate who only appears during elections.
"This election, make sure you choose a representative who will be your voice and ears in addressing community issues right up to national issues in Parliament," said Johari, who was Titiwangsa as its member of parliament from 2013 to 2018.
In the 14th general election, Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun won Titiwangsa with a 4,139-vote majority, defeating Johari and Pas' Mohamad Noor Mohamad.
In the upcoming 15th General Election, Johari will face off against Pakatan Harapan's Khalid Abdul Samad, Pejuang's Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Perikatan Nasional's Dr Rosni Adam.
