Umno yet to decide if Anwar, unity govt leaders will attend general assembly

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno supreme council during its monthly meeting on Thursday will decide whether to invite unity government leaders to attend the 2022 Umno General Assembly next week.

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the meeting's agenda will include the possibility of providing live feed of the delegates' speech and inviting the unity government leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to join the assembly.

"Umno will decide whether to extend an invitation to the unity government leaders. Just wait for the decision," he said in a press conference at Menara Datuk Onn, here, today.

The 2022 Umno General Assembly, scheduled for three days, will start on Jan 11 at the World Trade Centre KL.

Ahmad said it was also possible that the topic of party election will be raised during the monthly meeting.

"The party elections have also not been discussed. Of course, it can be brought up on Jan 5. We have one more supreme council member special meeting on Jan 12," he said.

On whether Umno will discuss a political pact with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in upcoming the state elections during the general assembly, Ahmad did not provide a clear answer.

"It goes without saying that the matter will come up as our involvement in the unity government will be mentioned by the delegates in their speeches," he said.

Yesterday, DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng said following the formation of the unity government, it is likely that Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional to come in as a team in the Penang state election, slated to be held in the next few months.

Lim said any decision of a collaboration between the coalition would be made after a meeting and a joint decision have been reached.
