Penang BN may get to contest in more seats in the state election

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) is expected to be given more than two seats to contest in the forthcoming state election.

The state BN currently held two state seats namely Permatang Berangan and Sungai Dua.

Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chow Kon Yeow said BN component parties had the potential to have more seats to contest in.

"Based on the principle that incumbent parties will get to defend their seats, BN will get to defend their two seats here, namely Sungai Dua and Permatang Berangan.

"However, there is still space for them to contest in more seats, possibly those contested by Pas and currently held by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu)," he told newsmen here today.

Penang has a total of 40 state seats.

In the 2018 general elections, PH won 37 seats, when Bersatu was still part of PH.

BN won two seats while Pas won the Penaga seat.

Bersatu currently holds four seats — Seberang Jaya, Sungai Acheh, Teluk Bahang and Bertam.

However, the four assemblymen were evicted from the state legislative assembly last month after it passed a motion to force them to vacate their seats in accordance with the state's anti-hopping law.

Meanwhile, Chow confirmed that there would no longer be any discussion at the state level on seat distributions.

"Meeting at the national level is still ongoing, which will make the ultimate decision," he added.
