'Wan Saiful approached us, not the other way around,' claims Tanjong Karang MP

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bersatu member of Parliament (MP) accused of acting as "brokers" for the Prime Minister has claimed he was approached by his accusor, Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan.

Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi said neither he nor Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, another MP named by Wan Saiful, approached the Tasek Gelugor MP to coax him into declaring support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Zulkafperi said it was Wan Saiful who approached them to ask what they received for going against their party and declaring support for Anwar.

Previously, while speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Wan Saiful claimed he was offered allocations amounting to over RM3 million, money for his wife's cancer treatment and legal battles, among others to back the government.

"If we look at all these offers, these are his (Wan Saiful) demands as preconditions to support the Prime Minister.

"He also approached me to ask about diet medication 'Wegovey', and confirmed that he had ordered two bottles."

Zulkafperi said Wan Saiful's remarks in the Dewan Rakyat were "clearly malicious, and defamatory".

He said the former Bersatu information chief's remarks were baseless and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

On Feb 28, Wan Saiful claimed to have been threatened to express support for the Anwar's leadership and said he was contacted via phone by numerous individuals for the purpose.

He said the first meeting was on Jan 17 at the Westin Hotel in Bukit Bintang, and the next was at the JW Marriot Hotel.

On March 21, Wan Saiful alleged that he was lured by Zulkafperi and Azizi to influence his behaviour, including the speeches to be delivered in Parliament.

Following this, he urged for the establishment of a Parliament select committee under Standing Order 80A to identify and penalise individuals who had made offers to influence the behaviour of lawmakers in the Dewan Rakyat.
