Top positions in Bersatu likely to see contests in upcoming party polls

KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) party election is expected to see no contests for top party positions.

Its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said there were no 'clashes' among Bersatu leaders for the top positions in the party election.

The Pagoh member of Parliament said he has already held discussions with nearly all Bersatu leaders to avoid conflicts and divisions within the party.

"However, further details about the outcome of these discussions will be announced leading up to the nomination day for the party elections.

"This move does not mean that Bersatu is rejecting the democratic process of party elections, but it is a strategy to ensure the party's survival in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16).

"During a recent Bersatu leaders' retreat, one of the proposals was for me to meet with other leaders to prevent clashes and divisions.

"Eventually, they asked me to negotiate, and I have met with nearly everyone," he told reporters after Bersatu's party convention at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Selayang near here today.

Muhyiddin added that he wants Bersatu to emerge stronger after the party polls to prepare the party for the next general election.

"Those who lose do not lose everything. Those who win do not win everything. I want our party to emerge stronger after the party election.

"Why? Because this party election will determine whether we win or lose in the 16th General Election," he said.

Muhyiddin called upon Bersatu's division leaders to do the same and to seek help from party leaders if needed.

"This is about the survival of our party, our race, our homeland, and our religion," he said.

In November last year, Muhyiddin announced his decision to defend his position in the upcoming party polls just a day after stating he would not seek re-election.

The same week Bersatu, during its annual general assembly (AGM), passed a motion rejecting Muhyiddin's initial decision not defend his post in the party election.

The motion was unanimously passed by the delegates and was announced by Bersatu permanent chairman Datuk Muhammad Suhaimi Abdullah on the final day of the party's AGM, today.
