D-day for Nenggiri as voters cast ballots today

GUA MUSANG: After two weeks of campaigning, today is D-day for the Nenggiri state seat by-election.

A total of 20,216 eligible ordinary voters are expected to cast their ballots through 46 voting streams within 20 polling centres and choose their new state assemblyman.

The polling centres opened at 8am and closures are expected between 2pm and 6pm.

According to Bernama, four of these centres namely SK Tohoi, Pusat Pendidikan Komuniti Pos Gob, SK Sri Permai, and SK Kuala Sungai will close at 2pm.

Two others - SK Pulat and Dewan Orang Ramai Pos Simpor - will close at 3pm.

Vote-tallying will be done at Dewan Perdana, Perdana Complex of the Gua Musang District Council.

The voting process is being managed by more than 400 Election Commission (EC) workers while a total of 995 policemen are on the ground to ensure the polling day proceeded smoothly.

The Nenggiri by-election is seeing a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani and Rizwadi Ismail of Perikatan Nasional.

The Nenggiri by-election was called after Kelantan Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared the seat, previously held by Mohd Azizi Abu Naim vacant.

Mohd Azizi, who is also the Gua Musang member of Parliament, was among the seven elected representatives dismissed from Bersatu for supporting the unity government.

In the Kelantan state election held in August last year, Mohd Azizi won Nenggiri with a narrow majority of 810 votes in a straight fight against Barisan Nasional candidate Ab Aziz Yusoff.

Yesterday, EC said the result of the Nenggiri by-election is expected to be known by 9pm.

Its secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said all polling boxes from the 20 polling district centres are expected to arrive at Dewan Perdana before 9pm.

He said the ballot boxes from two Orang Asli settlements would be among the first to arrive.
