Differences of opinion are needed in a healthy society

LETTERS: We should not be using the law or issue legal threats to suppress views, ideas or opinions just because they do not suit our way of thinking.

There seems to be a new trend in our society where certain individuals and groups like to make a report or complaint to the enforcement authority with the hope that legal action will be taken against anyone who has a different view.

If we allow this to continue, our society might be unable to think and speak up. Ultimately, society will suffer, and the country will not progress much.

Therefore, we should encourage people to speak up and express their views, ideas and opinions without being subjected to the threat of legal consequences. Why can't we meet and have a peaceful dialogue to resolve differences?

Freedom of speech and expression should be valued and protected at all times. It is part of the basic human rights for every human being. It can bring many benefits to society and country.

This is clearly stipulated under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 (UDHR) and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966 (ICCPR).

It is also protected under our Federal Constitution, the highest law of the land. Without such freedom and basic rights, people will not be able to protect themselves from any ill treatment and oppression.

The act to suppress freedom of speech and expression might also deter the development of constructive ideas vital for our society and country's advancement.

While people should be able to express their views and ideas, any differences should be resolved through discussions and debates, not by taking legal action.
