Jin Wei bows out in last eight in Paris

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Goh Jin Wei's return to competitive action came to an end after she bowed out in the quarter-finals of the Orleans Masters.

The former world junior champion was unable to get going as she was outclassed 21-14, 21-13 by World No. 10 Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in Paris on Friday.

It was still a positive outing for the 21-year-old who had missed 13 months of action after suffering a stomach ailment in 2019.

The Penangite, who dropped from a career-best ranking of 24th in the world to No 146, had looked sharped after beating Turkey's Aliye Demirbag in the second round on Thursday.

But top seed Pornpawee, runner-up at last week's All England, was just a class above on the day.

The Thai shuttler goes on to face compatriot and third seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan for a place in the final.

Jin Wei's defeat means Malaysia's interest in Orleans also came to an end after men's singles shuttler Cheam June Wei and mixed pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien bowed out in the third round and second round, respectively, on Thursday.

There were some better results in Poland with four men's singles shuttlers through to the second round of the Polish Open on Friday.

Leong Jun Hao had a big scare before prevailing 9-21, 21-17, 21-17 against Czech opponent Jan Louda to set up a second-round meeting with Slovakian shuttler Miha Ivanic.

Also through to the second round was Ng Tze Yong who downed Spain's Carlos Piris 21-9, 21-14. He meets third seed Felix Burestedt of Sweden next.

The others who made it through were Sholeh Aidil and former national shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin.

In men's doubles, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also won their opening match by beating Joel Hansson-Meiker Bexell of Sweden 21-15, 21-14.

The Malaysians play compatriots Nurfirdaus Azman-Yap Roy King, who received a first-round bye, next.

In mixed doubles, Choong Hon Jian-Toh Ee Wei also got through by beating homesters Robert Cybulski-Olga Miksza 21-16, 21-11.

They go up against fourth seeds Miha Ivancic-Petra Polanc in the second round.
