Jin Wei retires from All England first round due to stomach cramps

BIRMINGHAM: Former two-time world junior champion Goh Jin Wei will rue her missed opportunity at the All England, but there was not much she could do about it.

On Tuesday, the independent women's singles shuttler was knocked out in the opening round of the prestigious Super 1000 event after retiring midway through the third game when trailing Germany's Yvonne Li 12-13.

Jin Wei had earlier won the first game 21-12, but it was in the second when she started experiencing stomach cramps.

Despite taking an 18-14 lead, Jin Wei could not wrap up the match and lost 22-20. Adding to her woes, she received two yellow cards for time-wasting.

Jin Wei's coach Nova Armada said: "Sometimes, bad things happen, and we can't do much about it but move on.

"It just wasn't Jin Wei's day or tournament.

"It all started when our luggage arrived a day later from Germany. Jin Wei and I arrived in Birmingham on Sunday after the German Open but only got our bags on Monday evening. Who do we blame?

"We couldn't even test the courts because we didn't have our equipment. Thankfully, the tournament referee allowed us to push our first-round match to Tuesday evening.

"As we know, Jin Wei won the first game (against Yvonne) very comfortably and took the lead in the second, but she started having cramps. She tried to ask for a break but the umpire didn't allow it, so she was shown two yellow cards.

"We could have won the second game, but as I said, it just wasn't our day.

"Bad things happen sometimes, we just have to move on. No excuses there."

Nova added that Jin Wei is not going through any serious problems and is fit to play in next week's Super 300 Swiss Open.

The Indonesian even joked: "Just as long as our luggage arrives on time, we shouldn't have any problem."
