'Inconsistent' Tan Jie-Ee Wei eye strong showing at World Tour Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Winning or losing is part and parcel of an elite athlete's life. However, this narrative cannot be used as an excuse for poor performance.

World No. 9 mixed doubles Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are well aware of this, especially after suffering a slight drop in form in recent weeks.Since becoming a pair one year ago, Tang Jie-Ee Wei quickly hit the ground running, winning four titles and breaking into the world top 10.

As a result, the pair have been nominated by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for a Player of the Year (Most Improved) award, and will be making their debut at the World Tour Finals next month. While they are humbled to achieve these milestones, Tang Jie said he and Ee Wei have much to learn from better and experienced players.

"As an athlete, it's normal for us to experience ups and downs."However, that does not mean we get to use it as an excuse when we don't do well.

"There is just so much for us to learn from other top players. How are they still so consistent, even when they are not enjoying their best form?," questioned Tang Jie.With about five months to go before the end of the one-year Olympic qualifying period, Tang Jie-Ee Wei want to end the year on a strong note and start the new season fresh.

"We're honoured to be nominated for an award, and are also grateful for what we have achieved this season."This will only motivate us to work harder, and have more desire to achieve greater success," added Tang Jie.

The other Malaysian players competing at the season-ending finale on Dec 13-17 are former men's doubles world champions, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.
