BAM acting chief: 'Election motive possible in poison pen case' [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: BA of Malaysia (BAM) acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam has not ruled out the possibility that next year's BAM elections could be linked to a poison pen letter sent to authorities recently.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating allegations against a high-ranking BAM officer accused of receiving an unauthorised allowance, reportedly outlined in the anonymous letter.

BAM's annual general meeting-cum-elections is expected to take place in April or May next year.

Speaking yesterday, Subramaniam expressed little surprise over the situation.

"This sort of thing happens for many reasons. However, I do not know why it is happening," he said.

"It could be (because of the elections), I am not ruling that out.

"We have seen so many things happen in life, nothing really surprises me."

Subramaniam has led BAM since late August, following the resignation of former president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria before the end of his term.

Declining to comment further on the ongoing investigation, Subramaniam said: "As you are aware, we released a short statement regarding the MACC investigation yesterday.

"We will stick to that for now and allow MACC to do what is necessary. We will wait for a conclusion.

"For now, there is nothing for me to add. Let's just wait and see."

On Tuesday, BAM confirmed MACC had visited its Bukit Kiara headquarters last week to collect information.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki clarified that the investigation targets a high-ranking BAM individual, not the organisation itself.

Subramaniam made the comments during a sponsorship signing ceremony with Yonex and Sunrise Sports Sdn Bhd, extending their partnership until 2028.

The original agreement was set to expire in 2026.

Under the renewed deal, Yonex will continue supplying equipment for national players and BAM-organised tournaments, including the Malaysia Open and Malaysia Masters.
