Selangor led by 'captain loud'

TAYLOR Regan may not be the best player in many teams but he often became the captain.

And the Australian defender also ended up as the captain after coming to Selangor two years ago.

That’s because Regan is a born leader and he has a thunderous voice to boot.

Regan, 31, admitted yesterday that he can be “loud” on the field and he isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind.

Regan said he was a captain in almost all the clubs that he had played for in the past 15 years.

He admitted it doesn’t mean he’s the best player on the field.

“I was often the captain at my previous clubs and I’m quite loud on the field,” he said.

“I talk, I organise and I am not afraid to say what I have to say. It may upset people but I do believe a leader and a captain must speak his mind to make sure everyone does his job.

“With or without the armband, I would do that but obviously wearing the armband for Selangor is huge.”

Regan, who formerly played for Negri Sembilan, admitted there is much expectation on the Red Giants to excel in the new season.

“After finishing third last year and with the signings we’ve made (this year), we must expect more.

“I think our fans want and deserve a trophy but it’s easier said than done because the Super League is difficult with Johor (Darul Ta’zim) being so consistent.”

Regan feels that Selangor are capable of winning the Malaysia Cup or FA Cup and they aim to qualify for the AFC Cup.

“I think this year we’ve added a bit more character with a different mentality that is more hardworking.”

Regan said with the signing of national midfielder Brendan Gan, Singapore’s Safuwan Baharudin and PKNS FC’s Rodney Celvin Akwensivie and Nicholas Swirad, Selangor will be a fitter and stronger team this year.
