KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Cheng Hoe has quit as the national football team's head coach following Malaysia's early exit in the recent AFF Cup in Singapore.
The FA of Malaysia (FAM) announced Cheng Hoe's departure today, thanking him for his years of service.
"Cheng Hoe has had a discussion with the FAM and has expressed his intention following the failure of the national team to progress to AFF Cup semi-finals in Singapore," said FAM secretary general Saifuddin Abu Bakar today.
"After an open discussion from all aspects, FAM respect his decision and have reached a mutual agreement with Cheng Hoe.
"FAM would like to thank Cheng Hoe for his 14 years of service with FAM where he started as the assistant coach for the national Under-20 (2005-2009) and appointed as national senior assistant coach (2009-2013) and reappointed in 2017 as assistant coach to Nelo Vingada."
Among Cheng Hoe's achievements as assistant coach were winning the 2009 Sea Games gold medal and the 2010 AFF Cup under Datuk K. Rajagobal. Cheng Hoe also brought the national team to second place in the 2018 AFF Cup as head coach.
