Khalid is worried Malaysia will suffer

Khalid Ali isn't impressed at all though the national team have just won two international football friendlies in a week.

Khalid, who was part of the Malaysian team that qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, doesn't see quality in Harimau Malaya though they beat Brunei (4-0) and Hong Kong (2-0) at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The former Selangor midfielder said though coach Kim Pan Gon is doing a good job, he is concerned the attitude of the players will negate the South Korean's efforts.

On Malaysia's performances in the two matches, Khalid said: "I don't see teamwork or a good performance as far as international friendlies go.

"The team are not up to an international level yet, there is no physical fitness, teamwork in all positions.

"They have to control the ball first before passing, that's a problem," said Khalid. "They don't know how to penetrate, in one on one situation against a defender.

"And the only one brave enough was Arif Aiman Hanapi but his fitness in the last touch after beating the defender isn't there yet.

"Koreans are tough... I know because I trained with them for two weeks. So, I am asking whether our national players can do it or not (under Korean Pan Gon's training).

"My worry is that because they are now at a level where their salaries are high, maybe their attitude is such that they don't have the heart to play internationally."

Khalid said he does not rate Brunei and Hong Kong highly, and he equated the Brunei side to "slightly" lower than the M3 teams that play in the third tier of the M-League.

He also pointed out that Hong Kong did not field their first team against Malaysia.

In reference to the Hong Kong match, Khalid said: "Their goalkeeper (Paulo Cesar) and the centreback are flat-footed.

"I don't think there's international quality there. Their midfielder is like a Statue of Liberty."

If based on what Khalid has just said about the national team, Malaysia are in big trouble in the Asian Cup qualifiers, which start on Wednesday at the National Stadium.

"Malaysia are in Group E with Turkmenistan, Bahrain and Bangladesh.

"Hard work is not just today or tomorrow, we need to concentrate for the next four years as half of the players are going to be retired.

"So we need to give Pan Gon four years if we want to see good quality.

"I see players like Arif and Safawi Rasid as able to make an impact, but Guilherme De Paula, the player with plenty of 'stickers' on his body... send him back to take care of the toll booth in Brazil," added Khalid.

De Paula, who was naturalised as a Malaysian last year, has been heavily criticised by fans for his "ineffectiveness" on the field.
