KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor's recent acquisition Ali Olwan and early season-signing Ronnie Fernandez have formed one of the most lethal attacks in the Super League.
This was evident in Selangor's 4-0 demolition of Kuching City in the Super League at the MBPJ Stadium yesterday.
And the Red Giants hope Jordanian Olwan and Chilean Fernandez will continue their act in the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) next week.
Olwan, making his Selangor debut, set up Fernandez for the opening goal against Kuching in the 11th minute before finding the back of the net himself in the 67th minute, converting a Fernandez assist.
In a post-match video, Olwan said: "I'm really happy with my first match and goal. Thank you, everyone."
Kuching City coach Aidil Sharin Sahak said Selangor's firepower was too much to handle.
Olwan and Fernandez's fluid combination will be crucial to Selangor's attack when they meet Thailand's Muangthong United in their ACL2 Group G opener.
Selangor coach Nidzam Jamil hailed Olwan's immediate impact despite his recent arrival.
"Olwan is a top-quality player. He played two matches with his national team just days ago, so we were concerned about his recovery. But he proved his worth, scoring a goal and contributing much in his debut," said Nidzam.
On Selangor's Asian campaign, Nidzam said: "Every opponent in the ACL2 is an elite team. We'll need to raise our game significantly."
Selangor are currently second in the Super League with 22 points, three behind leaders Johor Darul Ta'zim who have a game in hand.
