Selangor hold Muangthong to away draw

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor started their Asean Champions League 2 (ACL2) campaign by earning a point in a 1-1 draw against Thai League 1 side Muangthong United at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok today (Sept 19).

This match marked Selangor's return to Asian competition for the first time since the 2016 AFC Cup.

The Red Giants displayed a solid defence in the first half, frustrating their hosts and keeping the score level at 0-0.

As the second half unfolded, Selangor coach Nidzam Jamil substituted

defender Quentin Cheng with Venezuelan winger Yohandry Orozco. This paid immediate dividends, as Orozco set up Ronnie Fernandez for a stunning goal just three minutes after the break, putting Selangor 1-0 ahead.

However, the lead proved short-lived. Muangthong's Tristan Do creating chaos in Selangor's defence, and a close-range attempt was deflected by captain Safuwan Baharudin. Purachet Thodsanit capitalised on the rebound to level the scores at 1-1.
