Gavin, Ben off to rousing start in World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: In their World Cup of Golf debut in Melbourne today, Malaysia’s Gavin Green and Ben Leong took the clubhouse lead before the first day of competitions ended in a three-way tie.

To avoid the inclement weather, the organisers moved up the tee times by an hour and under crisp conditions, Gavin and Ben shot a superb eight-under (through 17 holes) in the fourballs format at the Metropolitan Golf Club.

The Malaysian duo who gained their spots in the World Cup after Taiwan and Chile withdrew, sank two eagles in the front nine and five birdies for a bogey-less round of nine-under 63 to finish joint second, a stroke behind co-leaders Australia, South Korea and England.
