KUALA LUMPUR: Golfer Gavin Green became the latest addition to the Malaysian contingent for the Paris Olympics, bringing the total number of national athletes qualified thus far to 21.
The 30-year-old made the top-60 cut by placing 53rd in the International Golf Federation's (IGF) men's Olympic golf rankings yesterday.
Gavin will be making his third consecutive Olympic Games appearance after featuring in the previous two editions, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
The IGF men's Olympic golf ranking utilised the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) list as the qualification avenue, where the top 15 golfers in the OWGR are eligible for the Games with a maximum of four players eligible from a single country. Beyond that, a nation can only qualify for a maximum of two players.
Gavin is ranked No. 257 in the world.
It's certainly something to be proud of as Malaysia is one of the seven Asian countries to be represented in Paris. The others are Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, and India.
Gavin will be seeking a better campaign after finishing joint 57th out of 60 players in Tokyo three years ago.
In fact, he enjoyed better fortune during his debut in Rio, where he came in 47th.
Gavin will savour a trip to Le Golf National, the host of the Olympics golf competition.
As a full-time European Tour player, Gavin is no stranger to the venue, having played there on three occasions at the French Open since 2018.
World No. 264 Ashley Lau is expected to follow suit when the women's ranking is finalised next week.
The Sarawakian, who is plying her trade on the US second-tier Epson Tour, is comfortably sitting 49th in the latest list.
