The 'Flying Sikh' returns to national championship

After facing some hard times in recent years, rally driver Karamjit Singh will reunite with old partner Jagdev Singh for another assault on the National Rally Championship this season.

Thanks to backing from new sponsor Cisco Security Academy, the duo will be competing under the Cisco Racing Team banner this year.

The opening leg of the National Championships will be held at Sepang on June 26-27.

A total of four rounds are on the cards this season.

Karamjit, who won the FIA World Rally Championship Production Car title with co-driver Allen Oh in 2002, is confident of fighting for the podium this year.

"I am grateful to Cisco for giving me this opportunity and believing in my abilities," said Karamjit.

"It has been a challenge finding sponsorship over the past few seasons.

"I am looking forward to racing with my close friend Jagdev, an experienced co-driver, who trusts my driving.

"We will be using my old Proton Gen2 car, which I had purchased from former national champion Saladin Mazlan.

"The car has sat idle for a few years now, but we are preparing it for competition and will conduct a few tests ahead of the season.

"I am quite confident that we can fight for the podium this season. If I win (overall), it will be my 17th national rally title."

Karamjit made headlines late last year when news that he had sold his 16-year-old Proton Waja to buy a newer Proton Saga so he could supplement his income as an e-hailing driver went viral.

The 59-year-old has raced in Proton cars for the vast majority of his career and admits that he has a sentimental attachment to the first national car brand.
