Construction of Sukma venues on schedule

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The state government has assured that the main venues for Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) 2020 in Johor will be completed on schedule.

State Youth, Sports and Culture Committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar said the state government had been given the assurance by the contractors of the project like Johor Land Bhd and Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor Sdn Bhd (KPRJ).

“We conducted site visits at these venues recently and the contractors have given their assurance that the venues would be completed on time and the projects were proceeding on schedule.

“For example, the swimming complex will be completed by April next year and the stadium in Mount Austin will also be ready by April,” said Khuzzan.

He said the state government had set a deadline of June 2019 for all venues to be ready, which is exactly a year before Johor hosts Sukma 2020.

“To ensure that the venues will be ready on time, we will continue to conduct site visits,” said Khuzzan.

He also said that the state government was confident that there will be sufficient lodging for the participants.

“The participants will be housed at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. I’m sure it will be sufficient for them,” said Khuzzan, speaking to the media after launching the logo for Sports Johor Sdn Bhd.

Also present were KPRJ chief executive officer Mohd Noorazam Osman and Sports Johor chief executive officer On Jabbar.

Sports Johor is a subsidiary of KPRJ and has been given the responsibility by the state government to organise and promote sporting events in the state, with the Johor Sports Council responsible for providing the venues and grassroot development.
