KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rugby (MR) believe the country will have its first national rugby stadium within two years.
The Sports Ministry will be hiring a contractor for the RM17 million project soon.
Malaysia Rugby (MR) president Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya said he was pleased with the commitment shown by the ministry.
"We are grateful that the (construction) tender for the stadium has been issued. This shows the commitment of the ministry in getting this stadium built," said Shahrul.
"From what I understand, the tender will be closed early next month and hopefully within two years we will have the first national rugby stadium in Malaysia in Precint 13, Putrajaya."
The stadium, however, is not the first rugby-specific stadium in Malaysia.
That honour goes to the Eagles Rugby Club Stadium in Sandakan, Sabah, which is a privately-owned facility.
Eagles Rugby Club have, in the past, allowed the national team to train and use the facilities there.
