MCO: Wee Wern turns to painting

National squash player Low Wee Wern is all about painting a picture of positivity in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With sporting calendars abruptly halted and the Movement Control Order (MCO) in place since March, the Penang-born has swapped her squash racquet for a paintbrush as a way to channel her focus during this trying period.

Unable to leave the house, the former World No 5 has re-ignited an old passion — painting — to keep herself occupied.

"I started painting again during this past month. It's something I've done before.

"I did it when I was out injured previously.

"There is nothing much I can do now except spending time in the kitchen and keeping in shape," said Wee Wern.

The national No 1 knows all about being forced out of action as she did not play competitively for almost two years following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to her left knee in March 2015.

With the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour also suspended until July, the future of the sport is in doubt.

And the extended period of non-action has already seen a few top professionals retiring. Among them are Hong Kong's former World No 6 Annie Au, England's Victoria Lust and Canada's Samantha Cornett.

Her motivation, however, has not waned and the World No 23 is now more determined than ever to make a strong return when the situation eases up.

"This situation is currently unpredictable.

"No one can say for sure when we can compete again," said the 29-year-old.

"It's without a doubt a tough period for everyone — physically, mentally, emotionally and financially, of course.

"Sports as a career can sometimes be brutal and it usually results in two things — either lose your drive and passion or become hungrier than ever.

"Having gotten through the tough times in the past, I feel that this is no different for me and I still have the drive to achieve my goals and lead the national team.

"I've yet to suit up for Malaysia as the No 1 in an Asian Team Championships or a World Team Championships, and that is something I am looking forward to when we get back to playing squash."
