Joachim, Aira ease into q-finals of squash's Asian Juniors

KUALA LUMPUR: Top seed Joachim Chuah hardly raised a sweat as he brushed off Iran's Salem Al-Malki 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 to reach the boys' Under-19 quarter-finals of the Asian Junior Squash Championships in Dalian, China, on Thursday.

Compatriot and second seed Harith Danial overcame India's Aryan Pratap Singh 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6.

However, Tay Jun Qian failed to reach the last eight after losing 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 to Hong Kong's Arthur Pak.

Meanwhile, Aira Azman, who won silver at the World Junior Championships in Melbourne last month, scored an 11-8, 11-3, 11-0 win over Sri Lanka's Chanithma Sinly to book her place in the girls' Under-19 quarter-finals.

National coach Shahril Shahidan said both Joachim and Aira performed well on Friday.

"Joachim was in top form, and his opponent could not keep up with the pace.

"Aira made a few unforced errors in the first game but regained her composure to score a win."

In the boys' Under-17 category, only second seed Lo Wa Sern reached the quarter-finals while three others lost in the second round.

Wa Sern defeated Abdullah Nadeem of Pakistan 11-3, 11-6, 11-4.

However, Amirul Aqil Zaidi lost to Sandesh Pra of India 11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 11-4, while M. Nickhileswar went down 11-5, 4-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8 to India's K. S. Arihant.

Compatriot M. Kreethi Pillay failed to match Pakistan's Abdullah Nawaz as he lost 11-5, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8.
